One-Time and Occasional House Cleaning
A one-time clean is our standard house cleaning, booked once. There is no schedule, nothing to sign and nothing to cancel, and Happy Maids sends the same employees and the same checklist whether you ever call again or not.
What is a one-time house cleaning?
It is a single visit, run to our standard cleaning checklist, with no commitment attached. Kitchen and bathrooms cleaned properly, surfaces dusted, floors vacuumed and mopped, bins emptied, and the microwave done inside and out.
We call it an occasional clean internally, because that is what it usually is: cleaning when you need it rather than on a rhythm.
You are not asked to commit to anything, and you are not treated as a lesser client for it. Plenty of one-time cleans turn into a schedule later. Plenty do not, and that is a complete transaction either way.
Is a one-time clean the same as a deep clean?
No, and this is the single most useful thing on the page. “One-time” describes how often we come. “Deep” describes how far we go. They are two different questions and people routinely book the wrong one.
The task lists are nearly identical. What changes is the verb:
- Occasional / standard — baseboards, trim, blinds and sills dusted; cabinet fronts spot-cleaned where marks show; showers given a standard scrub
- Deep — the same surfaces hand-washed; the whole cabinet front washed, grease film above the range included; a far longer scrub of shower glass, tile and grout
So the honest rule is this: if the house has been kept up, one standard clean will make it look excellent. If it has not been cleaned properly in a year, one standard clean will not get there — that is a deep clean, and it takes longer. Tell us the truth about the house on the phone and we will tell you which one you need. Every task sits side by side on the room-by-room house cleaning checklist.
When a single clean is the right call
Nobody has to justify it, and we are not going to talk you into a schedule you did not ask for. These are the reasons people actually call.
- People are coming — family staying, a party, the holidays, or a house about to be photographed for a listing
- The end of a stretch — illness, surgery, a new baby, a parent who needed looking after. Houses get away from people and getting one back is ordinary work for us
- You want to try us first — one visit tells you more about a cleaning company than any amount of reading about one
- The house is kept up and just wants one proper reset — usually a couple of times a year
- Somebody else's house — arranging a clean for a parent, an adult child, or a friend who is not up to it right now
How is a one-time clean priced?
By the time it takes. One-off work is charged hourly and pro-rated in ten-minute increments, so you pay for the time our cleaners are actually in the home and nothing else.
That is deliberately different from how a recurring plan is priced:
- One-time, deep, and move-in/move-out work — by time, because we have not been in the home before and condition is the thing we cannot see over the phone. You get a time range up front and the final charge follows the real hours
- Weekly, bi-weekly and monthly plans — a flat rate, based on the size of the home, the services chosen and its condition. It does not move visit to visit
Two things follow from that, and we would rather say them than have you find out:
- Recurring clients get a discount tied to how often we come. A single visit does not carry it, because the saving comes from a home that never gets a chance to build up
- Clearing the floors before we arrive genuinely lowers the bill, because the clock is running on cleaning either way
The estimate tool gets you into the right range in about a minute. Call 847-382-0082 for the actual number — free, no obligation, and a person picks up.
What is included, and what is not
The standard checklist runs the same way on a one-time visit as it does for a long-standing client. Every room, top down, floors last. The full task list is on the house cleaning checklist, room by room.
What comes through the door on every visit, including a one-off:
- Green, kid- and pet-safe products — standard on every clean, never an upsell and never an extra charge
- Sealed-HEPA SEBO vacuums — they hold what they lift instead of returning fine dust to the room, which matters in homes with pets
- Color-coded microfiber — a cloth used in a bathroom cannot end up on a kitchen counter
- Our own supplies and equipment — you keep nothing on hand for us
And the published limits, which apply to every service we run:
- No moving large or heavy furniture, and nothing over 25 pounds lifted
- No appliances that are permanently connected to electric, gas or water are moved
- Nothing above the second step of a step ladder; extension poles are used where they reach
- No exterior windows or any part of the home's exterior
- No washing walls or ceilings, no chandeliers, nothing inside a fireplace
- No inside of a dishwasher, washing machine or dryer; no laundry or folding
- No inside China cabinets, stocked closets or drawers, or behind glass and solid doors
- No bodily fluids, pet waste, mold or other biohazards; no homes with an active pest infestation
- No wet-cleaning TV or computer screens, and no wiping light bulbs
- No carpet cleaning or steam cleaning
- No hard water or mineral buildup that needs more than standard supplies and tools
- No sorting, organizing or decluttering — and a badly cluttered room may not be cleanable in the booked time
What does a one-time clean cost?
Happy Maids prices every clean by the time a home honestly takes — square footage, how many bathrooms, and the condition it is in right now. Two very different homes should not pay the same number, so we do not pretend they do.
Run the quick estimate for a ballpark, then call us for your exact price — free, no obligation, and a real person answers.
- Home size & baths — the two biggest levers.
- How often we come — recurring visits lower the per-clean rate.
- Add-ons — inside oven or fridge, interior windows, and more, on request.
You don't have to have the whole house cleaned. Plenty of clients have us clean only the rooms they use, alternate floors between visits, or skip tasks they handle themselves. Read what you can change.

Common questions
Can I book a one-time cleaning with no contract or commitment?
Yes. There is no contract, no minimum number of visits and nothing to cancel afterwards.
A deposit is taken when you book a first appointment and it goes toward the cost of the clean. Cancel very close to the date and it can be forfeited, so give the office as much notice as you can — they will tell you the exact terms when you book.
If you decide afterwards that you want us back on a schedule, you call us. We do not put you on one by default.
How much does a one-time house cleaning cost?
There is no flat rate. A 1,800 square foot townhouse and a 5,000 square foot house are not the same job, and a one-time clean is charged for the time it takes.
Four things drive that time:
- Square footage — the single biggest factor
- How many bathrooms — they take longer than any other room
- Condition at the start — how long it has been since the house was cleaned properly
- What you add — inside the oven, inside the refrigerator, interior windows
Try the estimate tool for a ballpark, then call 847-382-0082 for the real figure. It is free and there is no obligation.
Do I pay the same as your regular clients?
No, and the reason is worth understanding. Recurring clients get a discount, and its size is tied to how often we come.
It is not a loyalty reward. A home cleaned every two weeks takes less time per visit than the same home cleaned once, because nothing is ever allowed to establish itself — shower film, dust on the sills, grease above the range.
A single visit does not have that history behind it, so it is priced on the hours it actually takes. If you later move to a schedule, the discount starts with it. The office can walk you through both on one call.
Does a one-time clean take less time than a deep clean?
In the same house, yes — hand-washing a baseboard is slower than dusting it, and a deep clean hand-washes what a standard clean dusts.
But that only helps if the house is in a condition where dusting works. You cannot dust a baseboard that was never washed — the dust is stuck to a film, and dusting only moves it around.
So the shorter visit is the right answer for a home that has been kept up, and the wrong answer for one that has not. We will tell you which yours is rather than sell you the version that bills better.
Can a one-time clean turn into a regular schedule later?
Yes, and most of ours do — but only if you ask.
Nothing rolls over automatically. If you want us back, call the office and we will put you on a day. How a recurring schedule works covers picking a frequency.
The first visit is also the one that tells us what your home actually needs, so the estimate for an ongoing plan afterwards is a real number rather than a guess.
How far ahead should I book a one-time clean?
As early as you can, and earlier than that before the holidays and in spring.
Recurring clients hold fixed days that are not moved without their consent, so a one-off goes into what is open. The further ahead you call, the more of the calendar there is to choose from.
Add-ons need at least one business day's notice and cannot be arranged on the cleaning day itself, so mention them when you book rather than at the door.
Do I need to be home?
No. Most clients are not, and we would rather you carried on with your day.
- Access — a key, an entry code, or a free secure lockbox we can set up for you
- Alarm — either turn it off for the day or give us the codes, and we will set it again before we leave
- Closed-door policy — rooms you want left alone, close the door; rooms you want cleaned, leave it open
Everyone who comes to your home is a Happy Maids W-2 employee: background-checked, bonded and insured, never gig labor and never a subcontractor.
What should I do before you arrive?
Nothing structural. Three things genuinely help, and one of them saves you money.
- Clear the floors of toys, shoes and clothes. We clean around what is left, and that takes time you are paying for
- Do not cook right before or during the visit — we do not handle hot stoves
- Point out anything fragile, or ask the office to mark an area to skip entirely. It goes on your file
If you would rather we simply worked around the clutter, say so and we will price the time in. What we will not do is sort or organize your belongings.
